NEW EM Guidance Application Released
This EM Guidance mobile application is now available for all iOS and android devices.
It is freely available and downloadable by all South African Healthcare workers via the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store.
The EM Guidance application is a cross-platform native mobile phone application to present the 2013 Emergency Medicine Guidance Books, issued by the Divisions of Emergency Medicine, at University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University, which is endorsed by the African Federation of Emergency Medicine (AFEM).
This application sees the provision of highly contextual Emergency clinical practice guidelines and practical local health system information being made freely available at the point of care for South African Doctors.
A native application allows the content to be downloaded onto mobile devices and accessed thereafter, even in rural and resource-limited environments with low levels of internet penetration and poor connectivity.
The design of the application is informed by Participatory Design sessions with Emergency Room doctors and guideline editors, wherein user-interface researchers and designers effectively determine the needs of doctors.
Currently, younger doctors are more mobile phone savvy, and the ubiquity of smart phones at the point of care creates a unique opportunity for this application to improve local clinical guideline adherence, clinical decision-making support as well as patient outcomes which will only be to the benefit of all in South Africa.
